How Much Should I Charge for an End Grain Cutting Board?

Price the board from your own numbers instead of from someone else’s listing. For a 12 x 16 x 1.5 in maple and walnut board, materials run about $70 and hands-on time runs five to seven hours, which puts cost near $231 at a modest $25 per hour once wear and a failure allowance are counted. Add a 30 percent margin for a direct sale and you are at $300, and a marketplace sale has to be divided by the fee rate rather than have it added, which lands the sticker around $337.

The pricing question almost always arrives backwards. Someone finishes a board, opens a marketplace, sorts by best selling, sees $45, and concludes that $45 is what the market pays. What they have actually found is the price of a different product made by a different process, often in a factory, and they have anchored their whole business to it before doing a single line of arithmetic on their own bench.

Your price has to start at your cost. Everything else in this article is about what to do after that number exists.

Why does the "materials times three" rule break here?

The old craft-fair rule says triple your materials and call it retail. On a $12 birdhouse it roughly works, because the material line and the labor line are in the same neighborhood. On an end grain board they are not even close.

Take the board that the full cost breakdown walks through: 305 x 406 x 38 mm (12 x 16 x 1.5 in), hard maple and black walnut, checkerboard of 38 mm squares. Materials land around $70, mostly because you buy about 5 board feet to deliver 2. Triple that and you get $210. Hands-on time on that board is five to seven hours spread over three days of glue cure. At $25 per hour, six hours alone is $150. So the "retail" price the rule hands you does not even cover cost plus labor, and it fails harder the more work you put in, which is exactly backwards.

The rule breaks because it prices the wood and ignores that this board is milled twice, glued twice and flattened once.

What goes into the cost number before margin?

Four lines, and hobbyists routinely skip the last two.

The failure allowance is the line that decides whether a shop survives its first year of selling. End grain glue-ups fail at a rate nobody advertises, and a board that splits along a glue line after the second clamp-up has consumed full materials and full hours before it becomes firewood. If you never build that into the price, your good boards silently pay for your bad ones out of your margin.

At what rate should you value shop time?

Anything from $20 to $45 shows up in shop-rate discussions, and the honest answer depends on what you would otherwise be doing with those six hours. My position, after watching too many makers price at $12 an hour and quit within a year: never go below $25, even on your first sold board. A rate below that turns a business into an expensive hobby with extra paperwork, and it trains your local buyers to expect a number you cannot sustain once orders come in regularly.

Beginners often argue they should discount because they are slow. Charge the rate and count fewer hours instead, or you will be stuck at the low number when you get fast.

Which formula actually holds up?

Start from cost, add margin, then gross up for fees. Margin is not the same thing as your hourly pay: the pay is already inside cost, and margin is what funds new clamps, a drum sander and the months when nobody buys anything.

Two details in that table do real work. Wholesale is higher than the direct price rather than lower, because a shop that buys from you will mark it up to $600 and your $347 has to survive that. And the marketplace line divides instead of adding: if fees take 11 percent, adding 11 percent leaves you short, since you pay the percentage on the final sticker.

Do the platform fees really take that much?

On a US Etsy sale in 2026, the stack is a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5 percent transaction fee, and payment processing around 3 percent plus $0.25. That is roughly 10 to 11 percent on a $300 board. If the sale comes through Offsite Ads you pay another 12 to 15 percent on top, and that fee is mandatory once your shop crosses the revenue threshold. A worst-case Etsy sale takes about a quarter of the sticker.

Free shipping is the other quiet fee. A 12 x 16 in board packs at 8 to 10 lb boxed and runs $18 to $30 in ground shipping across the US, more to the west coast from an east coast shop. Advertise free shipping without moving that into the price and you have just donated most of a board's margin.

How do you get this number without a spreadsheet every time?

The arithmetic is not hard. It is tedious the fourth time you change the square size and have to redo purchased volume, waste, glue quantity and cost.

What if nobody pays $300?

Sometimes they will not, and the answer is rarely to cut the price. A $300 checkerboard sits next to a hundred visually similar boards, so the buyer sorts by price and you lose. The same six hours put into a chevron or a 3D cube pattern produces something the stall next door does not have, and a board with no direct comparison gets judged on whether the buyer wants it rather than on whether it is $40 cheaper elsewhere.

The other lever is size and story. Larger boards carry margin better because material scales linearly while setup time does not: a 16 x 20 in board costs maybe 60 percent more in wood and 20 percent more in hours. Handing over a care card and the printed glue-up diagram from your own project files also moves a board out of the commodity bracket, at a cost of one sheet of paper.

Custom and corporate orders are where the price stops being contested at all. A named wedding gift or a set of ten boards for a company has no marketplace listing to compare against.

The short version

Cost the board honestly at around $231 for a 12 x 16 in maple and walnut checkerboard, take 30 percent margin for a direct sale, and divide by the fee rate instead of adding it if the sale runs through a platform. If that lands near $300 and your market resists, change the pattern rather than the margin.
