Is There a Free End Grain Cutting Board Design Tool?

Yes, several. CBdesigner mocks up strip patterns in the browser, SketchUp Free handles general 3D modeling, and board foot calculators estimate lumber volume. What none of them does is connect the pattern to a cut list with kerf, waste and cost. Endgrain Studio was built to close exactly that gap, and its base tier is free.

The question comes up in every woodworking forum about once a week, usually from someone staring at a sketch of a checkerboard and realizing they have no idea how many strips to cut. The honest answer has two halves. Free tools for parts of the job exist and some are decent. A free tool that takes you from pattern idea to a lumber order used to not exist at all, which is why the standard advice for years was "use graph paper and accept the waste".

CBdesigner deserves its reputation. It has circulated in cutting board communities for years, it runs in the browser, and for answering "would walnut squares against maple look good" it is quicker than anything else. It is a preview tool though. When the screen shows you a pattern you like, you still leave with no strip widths and no idea whether the board takes 2 or 4 board feet of lumber.

SketchUp Free sits at the other extreme. You can model an end grain board down to the last strip, and furniture makers do. The catch is time: modeling 60 individual glued strips takes an evening, and the model still knows nothing about kerf or the order of glue-ups. I have yet to meet a hobbyist who did it twice.

How far does a spreadsheet actually get you?

Further than most people expect, as long as the pattern stays flat. A classic checkerboard from two species is four formulas: strip width equals square size, strip count equals panel width divided by square size, panel length equals slice count times slice width plus kerf per cut, lumber volume equals the sum of strips with a milling allowance.

Take a 305 x 406 mm board (12 x 16 in) with 38 mm squares. Eight strips of maple, eight of walnut, crosscut into slices at 44 mm with a 3 mm kerf for a full-kerf blade on a 250 mm saw. The spreadsheet handles this fine, and if that is the only board you ever make, you may not need anything else.

The model collapses on the first interesting pattern. A brick offset shifts every second row by half a square, which changes slice alignment and scrap. A chevron cuts at 45 degrees, and every angled cut throws away a triangle at each end of the strip. A 3D cube pattern uses three species in strips of two different widths, cut at two different angles. Each of these turns "four formulas" into a page of trigonometry where one wrong cell means the lumber order comes up a strip short, and matching walnut color from another board a week later is a lottery.

The other thing a spreadsheet never tells you is waste. On end grain work the losses from kerf, milling and squaring routinely land at 25 to 30 percent of the purchased volume, and for angled patterns above 40 percent. Skipping that line item is the single most common reason first boards go over budget.

Where do the mockup tools stop?

The gap between a pretty preview and a production plan is a list of numbers: widths and count of strips for the first glue-up, panel length with kerf per crosscut, slice width with a flattening allowance, lumber volume by species, and what all of it costs. A preview tool gives you none of that list. A calculator gives you the last item only, and only if you have already worked out the rest by hand.

There is also a quieter problem: repeatability. A customer who orders a second board expects it to match the first one. If the design lives in a screenshot and a pile of pencil notes, reproducing the exact strip sequence six months later is guesswork. This is the request that eventually pushes selling woodworkers off free preview tools, more often than any missing feature.

Does Endgrain Studio close the gap?

The short version

For a one-off checkerboard, graph paper and a board foot calculator genuinely suffice, and I would not talk anyone out of them. The moment the pattern goes angled or a second copy of the board is on the table, hand math starts costing real lumber: a wrong kerf assumption on a 16-slice board eats 48 mm of panel length, which is one full slice. Free tools that stop at the preview leave that math to you. Pick the tool by whether it outputs cut sizes, and check what one cut costs you in kerf and allowances, where that 3 mm per cut is traced through a whole lumber order.
